I have been breeding and showing my Australian Kelpies for the last 22 years and have enjoyed every minute of it.
It all started with a beautiful chocolate bitch called Aust Ch Morkerbook Sunlover. I mated her to a lovely black dog from NSW, Aust Ch Butterbone Keepit Dark. This mating raised an eyebrow or two but I had made my decision, some new bloodlines were needed to create my line. The mating was a very successful cross - the start of Oatland Kelpies.
I have always tried to breed true to type and temperament with free flowing movement and great personality. I generally only have one litter per year this ensures plenty of time with the puppies. They are introduced to as many new experiences as possible - chooks, cows, horses, ride-on mowers and various other things so that they are well adjusted and ready to go to their new homes.
Over the years I have had a great deal of joy and happiness showing my dogs, winning numerous BIS titles at 'All Breeds' Shows and also at Club Level. In 1996 Aust Ch Oatland Redskin won Reserve In Show at Brisbane Royal Show. A fantastic achievement especially for a Kelpie. In 2003 I managed to better this accomplishment. Aust Ch Oatland Piccaninny had the 'ultimate win' - Best In Show at Brisbane Royal Show which put her in the record books. To my Knowledge these two Kelpies are the only Kelpies to achieve these wonderful titles from the same kennel.
Australian Kelpies are working dogs and I enjoy giving them work to do. I have been an active participant in herding since it began, and some of my dogs have already achieved their Instinct tests. I am hoping to continue with herding again this year. After all that is what the Kelpie is bred for!!!
The Kelpie is a great dog, a wonderful companion, easy to train, very active with a personality all of its own, extremely loyal and forever wanting to be with and please you constantly - so once you have experienced life with a Kelpie you will never look back or possibly ever have another breed.
